About "The ascetic"
The ascetic or ‘sadhu’ is someone who embodies purity, virtue, self-discipline, completeness, and near perfection – albeit with no attention to personal appearance. The artist has deftly captured the quietude of the ascetic, while portraying the unkempt appearance and the signature mark on the forehead.
The use of muted colors accentuates the simple and austere life that true ascetics lead, and so is the portrayal of the bushy beard and hair. The long beard and hair on ascetics signifies a sense of calm and no hurry – a way of life unaffected by the disapproval of those around. The tranquility emanating from the canvas is actually inspiring, leading the onlookers to feel a sense of calm.
